  • DARK THEY WERE, AND GOLDEN EYED by Ray Bradbury     The Bittering family arrives on Mars, but Harry is suspicious of the changes he feels. When they find out they are trapped on Mars, Harry starts to build a rocket but then gives up and goes to the villa with everyone else. Years later men come from Earth and find only Martians, so they start a new settlement again.

  • Instinct
  • Sweetie look, there's something wrong with these peach blossoms!
  • They look fine!
  • "The wind blew as if to flake away their identities. At any moment the Martian air might draw his soul from him, as marrow comes from a white bone.” The quote suggests that the setting in a way engulfed the family which supports the idea that Mars’ surroundings caused a great change to the family.
  • I don't like this.
  • Futuristic Settlement
  • “‘I feel like a salt crystal,’ he said. ‘In a mountain stream, being washed away. We don’t belong here. We’re Earth people. This is Mars. It was meant for Martians.” The quote suggests that the conflict is that the Earth people are being changed into Martians which supports the idea that when Harry saw that his family was changing he immediately followed his instinct and was worried.
  • Harry Bittering
  • This feels wrong!!! Let's go back home to Earth!!!
  • No way, this is great!
  • Mars is changing everything about the Earth people.
  • “Lying abed, Mr. Bittering felt his bones shifted, shaped, melted like gold.” The quote suggests that the conflict is that Mars is changing the Earth people which supports the idea that only Martians can survive on Mars.”
  • The main character, Harry Bittering, because the theme is that you should always follow your instincts, and he was the only one that did until he gave in to Mars. #alwaystrustyourinstincts
