Once, not long ago, there was a young squirrel who had never before gone through a winter. There was also an old, wise squirrel, who had been alive for many years and lived through lots of hardships.
The young squirrel had recently noticed that the air was getting colder, and some leaves were falling off trees around him in his forest. The young squirrel, being the naive kid he was, ignored it and got on with his daily business.
One day, the young squirrel was collecting sticks to build up his nest. He was approached by the wise old squirrel. The old squirrel asked, “Are you prepared for the coming winter? In these northern woods, it can get very cold and dangerous.”
The young squirrel, who was busy with his everyday tasks, told the old man that he knew well what he was doing and continued to collect sticks and leisurely eat acorns. “I’ve been here for almost 9 months, so I think I know what i’m doing.”The old squirrel shrugged it off and walked away, expecting to run into the young squirrel again.
And so he did, almost a month later. It was early November, and the air was crisp and cold. The old wise squirrel knew that this meant that snow would soon come. This prompted him to travel around, telling all squirrels to prepare for the coming winter. He himself still had much to do, but had to warn the newcomers around.
After a long day of work, the wise squirrel spotted the young squirrel collecting dead leaves in his lawn, near the town’s lake (now with a thin layer of ice around the edge from the cold winter weather.)
