Storyboard Text

  • Sophomore Year of High School
  • Senior Year of High School
  • Band is a family, and family helps one another out.
  • I want to do that too!
  • SAC Years 2015-2018
  • I had a credit issue with my graduation timeline, where i had to either drop the medical magnet or drop band in order to graduate on time. Upon meeting with the counselor, I dropped the medical magnet in order to pursue music, which I felt was what i wanted to do, little did i know this would lead me to want to teach future students the same music that helped change my life.
  • Acceptance to UIW
  • The choice is a no-brainer, UIW is the better option.
  • It was this year when Mr. Tapia, my band director, told me something that has stuck with me and made me want to do what he does. He said, "Band is a family, and family helps one another out." So I wanted to teach music to students when I got out of college, helping students have that sense of academic security that band gave me.
  • UIW Part 1
  • Time in SAC was tough, but not hard. It felt almost like i was getting nowhere degree-wise, or dream-wise. I was learning music, but i was not learning how to teach music. My goal was to get out of SAC and go to UTSA or UIW, whichever had FAFSA to offer as SAC gave me no FAFSA to attend, surprisingly.
  • UIW Part 2
  • And that is my story!
  • It came all of a sudden in the summer months of 2018, that i was accepted to UIW and given the price tag on my future. But just a week later, and after an unsuccessful meeting with the UTSA Counseling and advising office, i was given my FAFSA letter from UIW and it was a blessing in disguise. 13k per semester of aid before any band scholarships would be added in august. I knew i had no choice but to accept, and i am glad i did so that summer.
  • Upon getting to UIW, i met professors who enlightened me in the music world. Dr. Richardson showed me how Band works together to make wonderful sounds. Dr. Metz showed me how music itself works in a theoretical way. Dr. Salfen also showed me how music has changed lives over the course of history. All these professors, and classes, helped introduce me to students and eventual friends.
  • Now, i have the future as being clear: being in the TEP, having my state content exam passed and working on scheduling my PPR, and clinical teaching, i feel confident in what is to come and that i can bring new musicians out of the young students i will have before me in just a few months or year.
