Johnny stabbed bob chapter 5 because he was drowning Pony and, if he didn't do something Ponyboy would've died. Bob was from the West side;which means He was a Soc. Bob died by the fountain and,Johnny stabbed him because Bob was trying to drown Ponyboy.
this is tough questions because your wondering why would you kill somebody instead of calling 911 or something and you think what would happen after people figure out you killed somebody for your friend

As he lies dying in Chapter 9, Johnny Cade speaks these words to Ponyboy. “Stay gold” is a reference to the Robert Frost poem that Ponyboy recites to Johnny when the two hide out in the Church. In the poem reads, “Nothing gold can stay,” meaning that all good things must come to an end.
