ECONOMICS- Settlers immediately started looking for gold, but later in 1612 John Rolfe brought over tobacco. This "new plant" soon became a cash crop.
GEOGRAPHICS- The settlers sailed up the James River and settled in a swamp. This was the first permanent English settlement, called James Town. Unfortunately, this location bred disease-carrying mosquitoes.
POLITICAL- In 1619, the settlers created a representative government called the House of Burgesses. This government was created because the king was to distant to make laws.
SOCIAL- 1609-1610 was known as the "starvation time". Hundreds died during the winter due to fire, drought, Indian Attacks, disease. and starvation. When spring rolled around, there were only 60 men remaining.
