To date, no food derived from GMOs has been found to cause new allergies. Nearly any food is capable of causing an allergic reaction. Most allergens are proteins, and an organisation states that 90% of food-allergic reactions in the United States are caused by allergens from only eight foods: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, shellfish and fish. Of those, only soy is available in genetic modification varieties and any individual allergic to conventional soy will also be allergic to GM soy as it is not different compositionally.
To sum it up here are the main points our opponents have addressed in favour of genetic modifications use in society. We pointed out that GM crops and animals greatly benefit the overall health of the environment as they are less maintenance and assist in the reduction of pollution and other impacts. We also stated that GM foods could feed the world in decades to come as currently droughts and floods are negatively impacting crops and there is a higher demand. Overall we strongly believe that GMO’s should be used in society as the evidence proves they have positive results.
So ladies and gentlemen, what have I told you today? Firstly we discussed the negative effect that GM crops can potentially have to human and animal’s health. We strongly believe that there are too few studies of the health of GMOs before releasing them out into society for human consumption.
Secondly, we addressed that when genetic modification combinesproteins, it poses a high risk of causing allergic reaction. When there is nolabelling of genetic modified foods individuals who suffer from allergy have noway of knowing if the food they purchase contains GM foods, posing a risk totheir health. And for all these reasons we believe GM foods should be bannedfrom society! Thank you very much.
