TommoPeaceful is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. Tommo is a kind boy whois fiercely loyal to his brothers Charlie and Big Joe, as well as his mother, Mrs. Peaceful.Throughout the novel, he struggles with feelings of inadequacy and guilt,especially surrounding his father’s tragic death. Tommo’s father was crushed by a tree as he wasrescuing young Tommo from the same fate. In an unfortunate coincidence, the waythat his father’s body was positioned when he died meant that his finger waspointing right at Tommo, which Tommo interpreted as a sign that he was to blamefor his father’s death.
Charlieis Tommo and Big Joe’s brother, Mrs. Peaceful’s son, and Molly’s eventual husband. He is presented as a fiercely loyal andbrave figure throughout the novel. He consistently sticks up for Tommo andthose he cares about, and always does what’s right. He defends Tommo frombullies at school, and later in the war he again defends Tommo against theterrible Sergeant Hanley. Tommo is often inspired by Charlie’sbravery, and signs up to fight in the war because Charlie does.
