Storyboard Text

  • William of Orange was the Dutch leader. It was considered dangerous to involve him because it would be appalling for his wife, Mary, to rise up against her father, King James.
  • The "Glorious Revolution" occurred when King James retreated to England after his soldiers sent to fight William's army deserted him.
  • The Bill of Rights helped create a system of government based on the rule of law and a freely elected parliament. It made it impossible for kings to oppose or to do without Parliament by stating that standing armies could be raised only with Parliament's consent. The Bill of Rights set forth Parliament's rights to make laws and to levy taxes. The rights of citizens to keep arms and have a jury trial were also confirmed.
  • The Toleration Act was an act that granted Puritans, but not Catholics, the right of free public worship. It did mark a turning point in history because few English citizens would ever be persecuted for Religion.
