  • In 1829, the Mexican government outlawed slavery. The settlers wanted to keep their slaves so they could grow cotton. The Americans also didn´t want to learn Spanish or follow Mexican laws.
  • Republic of Texas
  • I don´t like the way these Mexicans are ruling.
  • They have an army out there and are ready to attack. Join me an protect yourselves.
  • In 1829, the Mexican government closed the state to further American immigration.

  • When Stephen Austin was jailed, the Texans did revolt. Santa Anna led 6,000 troops to Texas to put down the revolt.
  • The Battle
  • During the siege at the Alamo, Texan leaders established the Republic of Texas because they were unhappy with Mexican rule.
  • Texan leaders set up temporary government and put Sam Houston in charge of the Texan forces. Houston gathered an army of about 900 men.
  • On April 21, the Texans launched a surprise attack, shouting, ¨Remember the Alamo!¨ They killed more than 600 soldiers and captured about 700 more, including Santa Anna
