This is when the narrator is spying on the old man in the middle of the night for a while, as the old man sits there in shock not sure where the narrator is.
The narrator is ending the old man with the bed.
The officers had suspected him of attacking his neighbor in the night, and asked to search the place.
A neighbor had been attacked in the night.
The officers had found nothing but the narrator was going crazy and confessed from guilt.
I confess, make it stop! Search no more he's under the planks!
