This is John, he is different than the other kids. Not because of how he acts or how he looks, but something inside him. He has type 1 diabetes. Type one diabetes is a disorder where the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. A vital resource for regulating sugar in the body.
Type one Diabetes is not like type 2 where it is induced by to much sugar. The pancreas does produce insulin in type 2 diabetes, just not enough. But what John is about to find out about his condition. Is that its origins date all the way back to the ice age.
Many of the kids at school treat John rudley because of this. They assume that his condition is caused by bad eating habits. They are wrong. Type 1 diabetes is caused when the bodies immune cells attack the pancreas.
Johns best friend, James, has a disorder as well although he doesn't know it yet. His condition comes from the most unlikely of places, A bean. James and John have always gotten along well because of their love of science. They sat together in cooking class.
One day during cooking class the teacher brought in a ingredient that neither of them had heard of before. It was a Fava Beans. They spent the class cooking the beans and at the end they all eat them. James felt uneasy and tired after eating the bean. The cooking teacher knew something was wrong and James was sent to the hospital.
At the hospital James and John learned that James had favism. The doctor explained that favism was a enzyme deficiency that is very common in people around the world. It evolved as a defense against malaria. Which was devastating in Africa.
