A single mother finds out that she is having twins and gives one of them away at birth. Their names were Paul and Benjy.
Paul is brought up with his seven older siblings by his struggling single mother,. His twin brother, Benjy, however is brought up as the only child of the wealthy Lyons family, who live nearby.
Paul and Benjy don’t meet each other until they’re seven years old, but immediately become best friends. The bond continues when the boys are teenagers and both live in the countryside.
As they get older, the huge difference in their backgrounds began to pull them apart. Paul was an introvert with few friends and Benjy was an extrovert with many friends and loved sports.
Paul begins to envy Benjy. This envy festers and as a result of this Paul grew to hate Benjy.
One day Paul's hatred overcome him and he violently pushed benjy into a corner. Paul had an awl in his right hand ready for a quick murderous blow. Then he saw the look of fear in benjy's face and the awl dropped from Paul's hand and he turned away.
