The Salem Witch Trials were a set of trials where many young women were suspected of being witches, and put on trial. These trials were not fair trials, for the colony was a puritan colony. Puritan is a very strict form of christianity, so being a witch was a very big deal. So big, that girls who were suspected of being witches were put to death.
The Pilgrims devised a plan for their own government called the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact stated that laws should be made by the men and agreed upon by most. Their government was one that allowed religious freedom, so people did not have to fear religious persecution. Women in the colony were not permitted to vote on laws in the colony.
The pilgrims were having a tough time with food. They landed at Plymouth during the wintertime, so crops didnt grow. When springtime came, half of all the colonists had died. They were saved only when Samoset and Squanto, two native americans, told them how to plant corn and other plants, and how to trap and kill wild animals for food and clothing. To celebrate their recovery, a celebration was held in Samoset and Squanto's honor, called the First Thanksgiving.
Subsistence farming was common soon after. Subsistence farming is farming mostly for personal need.
The Pilgrims did lots of whaling, which is the hunting of whales for food and clothing, fishing, which is the hunting and killing of fish for food, timber, which was the cutting down and selling of wood, and there were many small farms where crops would be grown and sold.
