The first day called Dhanteras, the goddess Lakshmi is worshipped; homes are cleaned and purchasing of gold occurs. The second day, Naraka Chaturdashi, commemorates Krishna’s destruction of Narakasura; prayers are offered for the souls of ancestors. On the main day, Lakshmi Puja, families seek blessings to ensure their prosperity. The fourth day, Govardhan Puja, commemorates Krishna’s defeat of Indra, it's the start of the new year. The fifth day, called Bhai Dooj, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for the success and well-being of their brothers.
