On April 26, 1587 Governor John White and 117 citizens set sail from England, their goal to establish a colony near Chesapeake bay in the New World. John white and the colonists arrive on July 22, 1587, excited for a new world full of possibilities. They found the the island deserted and the buildings destroyed from the previous attempt to colonize the island.
Life in the Roanoke colony was difficult. There was sickness and soon the weather would become less than desirable. However, John White's daughter,Elinor, gave birth to Virginia Dare the first English baby to be born in the New World.Since, supplies would soon dwindle, John White left to get some for the colonists.
After John White left the weather became cold and supplies began to run low. The colonist couldn't survive much longer. So, the colonists carved CRO on a tree, took their remaining supplies, and headed to Croatoan island seeking help from the natives. They decided to not leave until their Governor, John White, found them.
