Holden Caulfield was kicked out of another private school and has no idea how he will break the news to his parents who are already disappointed in him.
Holden does his Roommate Stradlader's homework and writes about his brother's death later that night Holden lays restlessly thinking about what his roommate and closet family friend Jane might have done on the date they had earlier that night. This angers Holden because he looks out of Jane and doesn't trust his roommate.
Holden leaves his dorms at Pencey and stays in a hotel. He goes down to the "lavender room" when he feels lonely and picks up woman and drinks. This drinking and picking up girls trend carries on throughout the course of the book.
Holden starts to miss his little sister Phoebe and decided to go try and find her at a park she normally goes. He talks to a girl who knows Phoebe but hasn't seen her at the park.
Holden sees an opportunity to sneak and see his little sister so he does and they have a good conversation that is soon interrupted by his parents coming home from dinner. Holden decided to leave but leaves his hat with Phoebe.
Holden ends his journey with Phoebe at the museum. They walk to the zoo and find a carousel. This was Holden at his happiness wearing his hat and having fun with his sister.
