Doctor: Conception starts when a women's ovary release a mature egg. A man will produce sperm starting at puberty and production slows down with age. Several million sperms swim upstream, only a few reach the egg. Only one sperm will be allowed in.
Doctor: Fewer than half of all fertilized eggs, which are called zygotes, survive beyond the first 2 weeks. So you are lucky! one cell became 2, then 4, then so on and so on. After just 1 week this cell division has produced about 100 identical cells. Then these cells begin to differentiate.
Doctor: After about 10 days from conception, the Zygote attaches too the mothers uterine wall. The inner cells of the Zygote become the embryo. While the outer cells become the placenta. Mom: What's Placenta? Doctor: Placenta transfers nutrients and oxygen from mother to embryo.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Doctor: Your baby is looking great! It has been 9 weeks since conception and this little one is already looking more like a human! AT this point we call the baby a fetus. Mom: When does the baby start to fully develop organs? Doctor: After 6 months, the organs will be developed enough for survival.
9 weeks after conception...
Doctor: Throughout this pregnancy you have to avoid teratogens. Mom: Umm what are those? Doctor: Teratogens are agents, like drugs, that can reach and embryo or fetus and cause harm. Whatever you take in, the baby takes in.
Mom: Why does my baby have some physical abnormalities? Doctor: Well you see, it is believed that you drank heavily during this pregnancy causing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This occurs in 1 out of 800 baby's born. It is marked by lifelong physical and mental brain abnormalities.
