  • Giles is told that he must tell the name of the source he got the evidence from about Mr. Putnam or he will be arrested for contempt of the court. Giles refuses to tell the name. Hale questions Judge Danforth about the validity of the trials and how they are taking the word of teenage girls. He mentions that the people are afraid of the court.
  • Proctor shows Judge Danforth the deposition (signed statement) that Mary never witnessed any signs or wonders that she had claimed she did. Reverend Hale openly says that he thinks Proctor has a point in his claims. The girls are only teenagers and they are the only evidence that the court has of witchcraft. He is silenced by Judge Danforth.
