Salva is a 11 year old boy who lives in Southern Sudan. He is at school day dreaming about his chores and his friends. He is thinking about his bothers and sisters playing and how their dad would bring them mangoes sometimes. He feels lucky that he gets to go to school.
Then out of nowhere there is a loud crack. The teacher tells Salva to run into the bush. As Salva is running away from the war, he is thinking about his family. He has no idea where they are and begins to fear that he is lost.
After joining a group of people and staying a night at a barn, he wakes up alone. No one was there and they left him. Even though he didn't know these people, they were the only thing he had. Now he is all lone and misses his family.
After meeting his uncle and traveling with him for a few days, his uncle is taken by other tribe men. Salva watches his uncle get killed by these men. His uncle was the only family he has right now, and he just lost him too.
After living at a refugee camp for about six years, Salva is being chased out of the camp by soldiers . They are killing many people and forcing them to go in the river filled with crocodiles. Will he be able to make it past the river without getting shot or attack by a crocodile?
Salva finds out that he is chosen to go to America. He is on his way to his new family in America. Finally after not having a family, he has an opportunity to have a family. His new family lives in Rochester, New York.
