At the beginning of the story, Romeo tells his cousin Benvolio and his friend Mercutio that he is in love with a girl that doesn't love him back. They encourage him to forget about her and come to a party at the house of Capulet with them, even though they know it will be dangerous. At the party, he meets Juliet, Capulets daughter, and they instantly fall in love.
Romeo is sad to hear that she is a Capulet but decides to go to her bedroom window to speak with her. Whilst he is there he finds out she loves him too. They speak at the window and make plans to secretly marry even though their families are fighting.
The next day Romeo and Juliet go to see Friar Lawerence who agrees to marry them.
After the wedding, Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, challenges Romeo to a duel but he refuses. Mercutio agrees to fight instead and Tybalt kills him. Angry and upset, Romeo fights Tybalt and kills him. Juliet is sad that her cousin is dead but upset because it means Romeo would be banished.
Juliet wants to be with Romeo, so she asks Friar Lawrence for advice, he gives Juliet a poison which will make her fall asleep for a short while, But everyone would think she was dead. Friar Lawrence would then send a message to Romeo and Juliet could come and meet one another and run away together.
Juliet follows her part of the plan but Friar Lawrence's message does not meet Romeo, so when Romeo finds out Juliet is dead, he goes back to Verona where he drinks poison and kills himself. When she wakes up she finds Romeo's dead body and stabs herself in grief.
