  • The Scarlet Letter stands for Hester's sins. Hester in the Puritan community has sinned with adultery. She was put in prison for her urges.  This quote represents how she is being released and now realatity will hit. She is forced to wear the letter A and publicly shamed by the Puritan society. Hester then struggles to try and find her place in society. Hester wanted to escape and start her life over. Pearl and Dimmesdale were also struggling against society. Pearl did not have a chance at living a Puritan life due to the community claiming her to be the devil baby. Dimmesdale was also convicted with adultery and his sin was taken to the grave when on his gravestone there was a giant A. This made him an outcast in the Puritan society.  Struggling to make their identity in society.
  • "she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and force of character, and stepped into the open air, as if by her own free-will." (47)

  • Hester was outcasted from       society after her affair with a   man other than her husband.        She has sinned and now must   be punished and labeled for    the rest of her life in the Puritan community.
  • Dimmesdale was also charged with adultery. He was the   man Hester cheated with. They were both punished for cheating and Dimmesdale took it to his grave.
  • Pearl never had a chance   at living a normal life and every in her society was against her just because   of what her parents did. The Puritan Society was  always against Pearl.
  • I am the child of sinners, therefore, I must be the child  of the devil.
  • Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of the scarlet has a very complicated diction. This helps his didactic tone throughout the scarlet letter. The main  antagonist is Hester and Hawthorne reveals through Hester that happiness can be harnessed though one's perseverance and not of many. Expressing that only looking deeper into the words will you find the true meaning.
