The Enlightenment Philosophers By: Aralyn Loftin
Hello my name is John Locke I am a great political philosopher of the enlightenment. I was influenced by the Glorious Revolution. I saw the state of nature as a good place and the social contract as a voluntary agreement to enhance life.
My name is Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I have a similar belief on the state of nature but differed on the role of government. I saw society as the corrupting influence on people. I felt it was the role of government to protect the "general will" of the people. American colonist largely rejected Rousseau
The name is Baron de Montesquieu. The greatest contribution came in government organization by promoting the ideas of seperation of powers , checks, and balances. I greatly admire the English system of limited government. My ideas are evident in the U.S Constitution
I am Voltaire. I was born in middle class family. I wrote many novels, plays, letters, and essays that bought me fame and wealth. I became known for my strong dislike of the Roman Catholic Church. I blamed church leaders for keeping knowledge from people to maintain power. I thought people should be free to choose their own beliefs. Follower believed God created the world and set it in motion. I then allowed it to run itself by natural law.
