Storyboard Text

  • Conditions were awful and inmates were often beat or abused. In some cases inmates were even chained to walls. Jails were corrupt
  • Criminals, no matter their sentence were all thrown in together. On top of that, mentally ill people were also grouped in and mistreated
  • Dorothea Dix was the voice behind the cause. She spoke out and gained publicity for the awful treatment of inmates
  • The reform caused better treatment and conditions in jails and proper care of the mentally ill
  • Woman began getting angry about some of the excessive drinking going on. They blamed alcohol for domestic abuse and other domestic problems/accidents.
  • Largely woman but also men, together formed the American Temperance Society to try and stop drinking as a whole. Though it didn't work it prefaced a more widespread version later known as Prohibition
  • Women were confined to household jobs and were now beginning to speak out for equal rights
  • Women were in charge of teaching their children but had no education of their own. They were also expected to conform to a society where they had no say
  • People got together to support the cause. Event such as the Seneca Falls Convention where the Decloration of women's rights was drafted are very important. Important things such as woman's suffrage came from conventions like these
