  • Exposition
  • I wonder if that hideous eye of his is open...
  • Rising Action
  • Who's there?!
  • Climax
  • The narrator watches the old man sleep every night. to make sure the old man's blind eye isn't open. The narrator explains that he "...turned the latch of the door and opened it..."
  • Falling Action
  • The old man hears the narrator open the door, and calls out "who's there?" The text says  "...the old man sprang up in the bed and called out 'who's there?'"
  • Resolution
  • The narrator sees the old man's blind eye open and kills him by suffocating him under a mattress. The narrator describes that he "...dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him."
  • Unreliable Narrator
  • The narrator cuts off the old man's limbs and head, then hides the pieces under the floor boards.  The narrator says "First of all I dismembered the corpse...deposited all between the scant-lings."
  • The police come because they were told they heard a shout and then suspected foul play. The narrator says he's innocent, but later confesses his guilt. He says "'I admit the deed!'"
  • Ummm... yes.
  • Did you kill the old man?
  • You're coming with us, sir.
  • In the beginning of the story, the narrator says "...why will you say that I am mad?... I heard many things in hell," meaning that he can hear voices, which contradicts him saying he's not mad.
