Storyboard Text

  •  And Athens and Sparta emgerged as two of the most powerful city-states.
  • THE END. For now...
  • In 480 BC, Darius' successor Xerxes invaded Athens.
  •  Athens needed more time to prepare for battle.
  •  So the Spartans fought off the Persians at the mountain pass of Thermopylae, allowing the Athenians to prepare.
  • At the Battle of Salamis, a small fleet of Greek ships called triremes faced the Persian navy.
  • Because of the triremes' small size, they were able to trap and destroy nearly one third of the Persian fleet.
  • Finally, in 479 BC, the Greeks defeated the Persians for the last time at the Battle of Platea.
  • The Persians left Greece and never invaded again.
  •  Get out, flilthy Persians!
  •  And don't come back again!
