  • On April 2nd 1861 off the coast of Sumter Island, South Carolina fired the first shots of the Civil War.
  • 1865-1877
  • On July 25. 1861, Lincol decalred war upon the rebellious south in order to preserve the union
  • March 4 1871-March 4 1873
  • The Battle of Gettysburg lasted from July 1-3 in 1863. It was the most destrucitve battle fought during the war ending up in over 50,000 casualties
  • C. 1865-1970
  • Reconstruction was a dark time for the south. After the defeat from the north the souths economy and infrascture was in shambles.
  • For a brief time during Reconstruction black people used their newfound freedoms to elect black leaders into Congress and local postions.
  • After the abolition of slavery and the passing of the 14th admendment southern states began passing laws to limit the power of black people such as voting restrictions
