In 1765, Parliament passed a law saying the colonists were supposed to give the British soldiers food, lodging, and any other thing they wanted without making a fuss.
"Hold your fire!"
This made the colonists very angry with the British soldiers. The Sons of Liberty protested and made fun of them and tormented them while they were staying at their houses.
A crowd of colonists gathered in the streets shouting to the british telling them they should leave them alone. They called them " Lobsterbacks" and other names.
" The British have destroyed us by killing 5 of our men and wounding 6 more!"
The british commander was angry, but he wasn't angry enough to tell his soldiers to fire. But one of the soldiers misheard and fired his rifle killing a man!
Then everybody panicked, and in the fray the British fired many more shots. On that day, 5 people died and 6 more were wounded
Nobody knows how the fight stopped, but we do know that when it stopped, it became the talk of the town for a long time. Samuel Adams, a man who was a leader in helping get rid of the British, made sure that the word was spread out everywhere.
