In the north, during the Industrial Revolution, many factories and textile mills sprung up along the Mississippi. Many women and girls worked there. New England has lots of harbors along the North Atlantic Coast. Northerners needed better roads so that they could deliver their manufactured goods to buyers. In northern cities, there was no infrastructure, and it was really unsanitary. In the North there are freezing winters and hot summers.
The south was very dependant on slave labor. Many whites owned slaves, and slave owners were at the top of the societal hierarchy. The Mississippi River and other rivers and channels provided transportation. The South had mild winters and long growing seasons.
