- Well..Algernon had the same surgery you are going to have, that is why he beats you.

- Charlie Gordon, a man with a very low IQ, seeks to make himself intelligent, and attends a night school in this pursuit.

- Soon, he is selected as a subject for a surgery that aims to enhance intelligence, headed by doctors Strauss and Nemur, and seemingly fails a few tests; one, against a white mouse called Algernon. Charlie hated the mouse initially.
- After the surgery, slowly, Charlie's emotions and mind amplify, strengthening. But a series of unfortunate events spurred by his intelligence; his friends revealed to have mocked him for being disabled and is fired from his job via vote, makes Charlie despondent.
- A budding romance with his night school teacher, and sometimes confident, Miss Kinnian, is one positive event as Charlie soon eclipses the doctors in sheer knowledge, as Charlie becomes close to Algernon, now loving the mouse.
- However, these happy times immediately shatter as after a period of time, Algernon regresses in intellect and his motor functions fail, leading to his death. Shocked and saddened, even as Charlie studies and publishes a paper revealing that such huge intelligence leaps like his and Algernon's was merely temporary.
- After his regression fully tears apart the intelligence Charlie gained, a pained and depressed Charlie; still remembering being a genius, heads away from New York...but not before begging anyone who would to put flowers on Algernon's grave..
