Storyboard Text

  • This is a situation of a sprain/strain. Sprains are common injuries of a ligament and strains are injuries to muscles or tendons. To take care of this before help arrives, you must remember the RICE method.
  • The RICE method stands for Rest, Immobilize, Cold, Elevate.
  • Rest: Limit the use of the injured body part. The moving of that part should be as minimized as possible.
  • Immobilize: Stabilize the injured area in the position it was found.
  • Cold: Apply an ice pack or something like a bag of frozen vegetables to the injury. This will reduce the swelling and pain. Do not place ice directly as it is too cold. Make sure that the frozen vegetables are in a bag or the ice is touching it with something like a dish towel. Keep it for no more than 20 minutes.
  • Elevate: Elevate the injured part ONLY if it does not cause more pain. After ice has been put, support the part in a raised position and apply bandages, do not put it tightly. With rest and cooling, it should heal. Call the ambulance if unable to walk, the limb is angled, or pain is severe.
