It was surrounded on three sides by water. Sea and overland trade routes linking east and west. language and culture were Greek, but traders and visitors spoke many languages. Life in Constantinople was more advanced than in Western Europe.
Conflicts between the east and the west
One of the greatest Byzantine emperors was Justinian I. Faught broke out and brought the town to rubble. Justinian was determined to rebuild the city. Besides rebuilding Constantinople, Justinian tried to reclaim some of the empire’s lost territory. They revised outdated and confusing laws.
Christianity was more than a religion it was a foundation of their empire. Constantinople, was intended it to be the religious center. Byzantines viewed the emperor not just as the head of the government but as the living representative of God
