Frederick was a slave that has been on plantations most of his life. He was born in Maryland on a plantation. He also never knew his mother because she was sold away. He is currently at a plantation with a master named Covey. Covey also treats the slaves like sheep.
Frederick was fanning wheat with some other slaves. Their names were Bill , William , and Eli. It was very sunny and hot that day and this job needed strength. He was walking back carrying a wheat basket when he fell. A dizzy feeling and a headache accompanied him.
He got up and did his best to get to the hopper. When he got there , he no longer had the strength to stand. Frederick managed to crawl away to get out of the burning sun. When the fan stopped Covey hastily went over to the other slaves and asked, “Why did the fan stop?”. Bill, a fellow slave, answered, “Frederick is sick.”.
Covey walked over to where Frederick was. He asked him what was wrong. Frederick tried to explain to the best of his abilities but he was too sick to speak. Covey kicked Frederick and said “Get up”. Frederick tried but failed. Covey said again “Get up!”. Frederick got up this time but fell a couple moments later. This time, Covey grabbed a slat and hit Frederick in the head.
The slat left a large head wound. Again Covey yelled “Get up!”. Frederick did not try to comply this time. He no longer cared, and by the time Covey left, Frederick’s wound had slightly healed. He was left in the burning sun to his fate.
Frederick is a slave that gets beat by his master but he promised himself that he won't get beat up without a fight any more. Though later in his life he runs away from the plantation to get away from slavery. He also becomes a successful author and makes a book about him escaping slavery. So if u get knocked down, you can get up and become something even better.
