Big Jim heading for Chicago, in search of a new team to help steal Lincoln's body.
Big Jim returns to Chicago and the bar he owns, The Hub. He discusses his plan with Mullen, Hughes, and Nelson: steal Lincoln's body, and demand Boyd's release and $200,000. Mullen and Hughes are in, but Nelson is out. Mullen and Hughes need a third man.
Swegles, a "roper" hired by Tyrell and the Secret Service, gets in with the group as the needed third man. He reports back to Tyrell everyday about their doings, and is paid in return. As is the case with most ropers, Swegles himself is a former criminal.
Swegles returns to Tyrell's office two days later and tells him of what just happened at The Hub. Tyrell is surprised, and tells Swegles to continue in the group. Tyrell writes a letter to Chief Brooks.
Agent Tryell visits Lincoln's son, Robert Todd, and informs him of the plan to steal his late father's body. Tyrell also tells him that he plans to catch these people in the act of stealing it.
Swegles brings in a trusted friend, Bill Neely, as a fourth member of the team. He convinces Mullen and Hughes that "Billy Brown" is a quality cracksman, and he can be trusted.
