  • throughout the 1900s, Japan had control of Korea. Now after WW2, Korea is no longer in Japanese control. and has been divided into two separate countries;North Korea and South Korea.communist North Korea was led by Kim Il Sung, and capitalist South Korea was led by Syngman Rhee, which were divided by the 38th parallel.
  • in 1950, North Korean soldiers marched past the 38th parallel after Kim Il Sung ordered the invasion of South Korea. And in just 3 days, they captured Seoul. South Korea was pushed back to Pusan, and South Korea called upon the U.S. to help them. This marks the start of the Korean War.
  • So as a response to the call for help, the U.S. and UN sent forces to aid the south Koreans. In charge of the troops was General Douglas MacArthur, who launched an amphibious assault on Inch'on, which caused many North Korean troops to be taken prisoner, and all of south Korea was recovered for now. One of the main reasons the US helped South Korea was so communism didn't spread to them.
  • General MacArthur continued past Inch'on into North Korea, and pushed all the way to the Yalu River, which made China nervous about whether MacArthur would attack them as well, so China sent about half a million soldiers to fight the South Korean Army
  • they continued to fight back and forth until they reached a standstill, at which both sides signed a armistice and established a DMZ near the 38th parallel
  • To this day, North and South Korea are still divided.
