  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • Bob, Bill, Grace ...
  • Climax
  • The children just got out of school and everyone has stones in their pockets.  The woman follow the men and the children get called over by their parents.  The families stand together.
  • Falling Action
  • After everyone is gathered they wait for the drawing to occur.  Mr. Summers asks if anyone is absent and assess the people who aren't there.  He goes over all the rules of the lottery.  Mr. Summers reads all the names and everyone opens their papers.  
  • Resolution
  • Once everyone opens their paper they "winner" of the lottery is revealed.  Tessie is the one with the paper with the black dot on it. 
  • Irony
  • Mr. Hutchinson says that he had put the black dot the night before in the coal company office.  Everyone grabs stones from the pile the kids have made.  Ms. Delacroix selected the biggest stone.  
  • Tessie stands in the middle of the crowd and everyone throws stones at her.  She says the lottery is not fair before she dies.
  • The lottery is not fair.
  • This is ironic because a fire house is catching on fire.
