One day I was at church when one of my old friends asked me these two questions
Well is she you know... like strict and mean? Cause you know most Asian parents are like that
Hey Matilda, so you know how your mom is Asian right?
My mind was raging
How could someone be so rude and stupid?!?! I never thought ######## would ever say that! My mom is the best parent ever and how dare she question her kindness and parent ability
so yah that's what happens when you go to brunch
Despite my hatred of that question, I tried to stay calm and polite by simply laughing the subject off.
Haha no my mom is the best.
Really? Oh ok then that's good.
Mom, you know I hate church
Had fun at church kids?
Yeah it was fine I guess...
The entire ride home was a blur. I felt trapped in an empty place in my mind. I completely regret not speaking up for my mom and my culture. If someone ever negatively questions your religion, sex, race or anything that you are, do not brush it off like I did. Tell them that they are being disrespectful and that it is not okay to ask such questions derogatory towards you , your family, friends, and/or anyone else that you relate to.
So children this is a moral lesson that you should stick up for yourself and that not all Asians tiger parents that are extremely strict, abusive and pressuring
