"Dis mahn was blin' too. Tree whole day 'e saw d'night. Den it true went away."
I can't see!!
"Yes, d'islan'! Der 'tis..."
Phillips mother wants to leave Curacao because of the World War II. "She said it was nice and safe in Virginia." Phillip did not agree and wanted to stay with his father. When they left on a ship, they were torpedoed and got separated.
Phillips wakes up to meet Timothy, an old black man. This is significant because he had never been without his mother for a long time. He goes to sleep because his head hurts and when he wakes up he realizes that he had gone blind. "After a moment, lying there in the darkness, hearing the creak of the raft and feeling its motion, it all hit me. I was blind and we were lost at sea."
We are here to help you.
Timothy sees a small island and decides that they will go there. "No people. No water. No food. No phones. It was not any better than the raft. In fact, it might be worse." Phillip wants to keep moving but Timothy is very stubborn. This is significant because this is where they stay for the rest of the time.
I can see!
After the cay was hit by the hurricane, Timothy died and left Phillip all by himself. " I stayed there beside him for a long time, very tired, thinking that he should have taken me with him wherever he had gone. I did not cry then. There are times when you are beyond tears. "
Finally someone comes to save Phillip and Stew Cat. He tries to tell them about Timothy but they think that he is crazy. "I remembered Timothy's knife stuck in the palm tree. It was the only thing that I wanted off the cay." They took him back to Curacao and his parents.
Phillip is reunited with his parents and goes to the eye doctor. They give him glasses and he can see again. "In early April, I returned to Williamsted with my mother, and we took up life where it had been left off the previous April." Phillip has grown up a lot through his experience and even feels older than his previous friends. He is also no longer racist because of his strong friendship with Timothy.
