  • I kept telling Dad it was time to go, but he kept putting me off and ordering more shots, as if he had to gulp a whole bunch of them down before he could face home. (182)
  • Erma Walls
  • "You can be hungry every now and then, but once you eat. you're okay," she said. And you can get cold for awhile, but you always warm up. Once you go on welfare, it changes you. Even if you get off welfare, you never escape the stigma that you were a charity case. You're scarred for life." (188)

  • Six months later, Maureen stabbed mom. It happened after mom decided it was time for Maureen to develop a little self-sufficiency by moving out and finding a place of her own. Police arrested Maureen. (275)

  • Erma jerked her hand out of Lori's grasp and slapped her so hard that Lori's glasses went flying across the room.  Erma relegated us to the basement after that. We weren't even aloud to use Erma's bathroom, which meant we either had to wait for school or go outside after dark. (147)
  • "For the daughter of the town drunk, you sure got big plans." (183)
  • I told Lori that Brian should come live with us in New York, and she agreed. But I was afraid that Brian would want to stay in Welch. He seemed more a country boy than a city kid. When I finished, Brian was silent for a moment. Then he said, "When's the soonest I can come?" (249)
