TAXING IMPORTED GOODS!! GLASS, LEAD, PAINT, PAPER, AND TEA.
The Townshend Acts
The Boston Massacre
The Stamp Act was the first tax that was officially placed on the colonies. This tax was passed on March 22, 1765 but later repealed in 1766. This tax was taxing every single piece of paper in the colonies and each paper had to be stamped. This tax came after the Seven years war and it was created because of the debt the British were in.
The Boston Tea Party
The Townshend Acts were created in 1767 by a man called Champagne Charlie. He had created a tax that would tax a lot of goodies in the colonies. Such as glass, paper, paint, and tea. The colonists had boycotted British goods because they never agreed to this law and were furious. British merchants were not getting any sales and the Act was revoked because they were barely making any of the money back.
The Intolerable Acts
On March 5th, 1770, The Townshend acts were taken down. But after that a riot happened and British Soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists. The colonists were throwing rocks and were attempting to provoke the soldiers, A black man named Crispus Attucks was the first to be killed.
The Battle of Lexington and Concord
In 1773, a law called The Tea Act was passed. This act wasmade to supposedly help The British East Asia building, which was tanking quickly. The British had lowered the cost of the tea in the colonies but this made the smuggled Dutch tea more expensive. When the tea ships arrived, Colonists made sure that they were not able to unload the tea. On December 16th, 1773, The Sons of Liberty had dressed up as Mohawk Indians and threw the teaoverboard.
The king was furious with the colonists for throwing the tea overboard, and installed a new set of laws that were absolutely horrid. They had shut down the Boston Harbor, It was firmly under British Control, and they sent more soldiers down to Boston to make sure these acts were being followed. The colonies started to rebel because of this, and formed sets of minutemen for battle.
The colonists had began to store gunpowder and weapons in large quantities, Though the Soldiers had caught wind of this quickly. The soldiers were ordered to march to Concord to retrieve these items but Paul Revere and others got horses and were moving to tell Concord, With the famous line “The British are Coming.” In Concord, The battle was heavily unbalanced and The Colonists had lost, But in Lexington, The colonists were able to drive the British away, thus starting the Revolution.
