  • Berlin Conference
  • The Berlin Conference took place in 1884-1885. It was the scramble for Africa in real life and 14 european countries met to create rule to divide Africa among them. The division of Africa started after expensive resources were found in South Africa.
  • Cote d'Ivoire
  • Abidjan is a large very old school city in Cote d'Ivoire and there are two seasons there, rainy season and hot season. The main spoken language there is French and there are many different religions. Islam makes up about half of all the religions while Aminist, Catholic and Christian being the smallest are the others.
  • Apartheid
  • Apartheid is an Afrikaans word that means separateness. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation that governed Africa for nearly 50 years. Apartheid was made a law in 1948 by the Africoner led national party and it aimed to protect the domination of white south africans over non-white south africans. During the time of apartheid in South Africa there were 148 apartheid laws.
  • I heard that during the colonial ground for South Africa the rights for native south africans were not used. I also heard the black majority of people were seen as a treat. They made life very tough for black south africans and they had to carry ID all the time, they had to follow strict laws, and public facilities were segregated. Marriage between white and non-white races there was also band and they classified people into four main groups. The groups consisted of white, black, colored, and indian.
  • Berlin Conference
  • Yeah I heard the rules were unfair such as any european country could claim any african country. I heard they could also claim any african country by telling other nations it was theirs, showing they could control the area they claim. The conference was also based on racist assumptions, they believed white race was superior to the black race and only white people should control Africa. Also, no thought was given to the language or culture groups in Africa when the division occurs and it was all done to benefit the europeans.
  • Once they found gold and diamonds here they decided to divide our continent. Many european countries competed over Africa and it was so fierce people thought war might have broken out. The conferences rules to divide Africa were not very fair towards African countries.
  • I heard that girls only go to school if there family is rich and typically only boys go to school while girls work. I also heard that church there is about three hours long, with a lot of dancing(singing and congo lines). I also heard that there are people who ride bikes and motorcycles on dirt pathways, people also walk on the sides of the road in groups with animals. Buildings there are not as modern but children still have fun while adults prepare food and do work. I heard people are very happy there and they also have some traditional meals different then us.
  • Cote d'Ivoire
  • I heard that most people living there live in either a wood shack or an apartment and two to three families usually live with each other. I also heard that many Africans eat attiéké which is a root mashed up into smaller pieces then cooked. People on the sides of the road also walk around selling fruits and vegetables and some ladies also sell clothes.
  • Apartheid
  • I heard that they divided black people into "homelands" that were not very nice, they were rural and overcrowded with little jobs. There was also very low wages and workers couldn't go on strike. This whole apartheid thing was needed for the South Africa economy, they needed a cheap work force especially in the gold mines. Outside homelands they were not considered citizens and could not vote. They also receive little funding for education in homelands. The required amount of education ended at age 13 and was structured for black people to do manual labor. There were lots of protests against apartheid and people like Nelson Mandela came out of this and worked to end apartheid. He soon after became the first democratically elected president in South Africa.
