Hi! My name is Wally and I am a water molecule. Today I am on my way to be cleaned so I can go to Huron Park for all of the students to enjoy!
At first, I may contain: - E. Coli - Coliform - Other Bacteria, viruses, and parasites - Dirt All of these things can make you sick so that's why we have a filtering system to make sure that does not happen.
Before I come out of the taps, I have to be filtered and purified so that I don't make anyone sick. This all starts when I get sucked into the filtration centre through a pipe.
As I enter the filtration plant I go through a screening process to get rid of debris, large objects, and anything else big enough to be caught by the filter.
Chlorine is then added to kill small microorganisms that are in me.
Alum is also added which causes small particles like silt to clump and form floc.
I then travel to a settling basin where the floc goes to the bottom and leaves the water on top. The cleaner water that is at the top is sent to filtering basins.
Any other biological impurities such as bacteria is filtered out here Sand- Filters out any remaining floc, algae, and silt. Carbon- Removes taste and odour.
