  • What happened
  • The Outcome
  • I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.
  • John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was an attempt at rebelling against slavery.  Led by abolitionist John Brown,  he led 22 men to Harper's ferry where they held some people hostage and found some slaves.
  • Pros
  • We should fight against slavery.
  • On October 19 1859 John Brown and his men overran an arsenal.  Some of his army got hostages and others wen't to find slaves to join them.  While this was happening people heard of the raid and they were surrounded.  10 of John Brown's army died and he was arrested.
  • Cons
  • The north is evil and blood thirsty!  Slavery isn't bad!
  • John Brown was tried for treason and murder and found guilty,  he was sentenced to execution by hanging.
  • What happened later
  • Even though John Brown's raid was a failure,  it excited people in the north and encouraged them to fight against slavery.
  • While the raid inspired the North,  it made the South angry.  They thought that the North was blood thirsty and evil.
  • Eventually the different feelings in the North and the South led to the civil war.
