  • September 15th 1916.. Battle of Flers-Courcelette
  • Which led to using tanks for the first time in WW1
  • Many broke down, but nearly a third succeeded in breaking through
  • They rolled over crater, ditches, and crushed through barbed wire. No one knew how to stop them
  • We need to keep this project secret from enemies
  • Ernest Swinton and william Hankey came up with the idea of an armored vehicle with conveyor-belt-like tracks over its wheels that could break through things.
  • We'll just tell them we're making a vehicle to carry water on the battlefield.
  • The purpose of tanks were to cross trenches, travel over difficult terrain, and to carry supplies.
