Storyboard Text

  • I am often asked "Mr Johnston, what role did the enslaved play in the Civil War? Were they treated equally?"
  • Well, after researching a bit, let me tell you.
  • The CSA viewed them more as resources
  • How about the Slaves?
  • Yes, we shall sieze slaves, food, and fuel from all over the South!
  • Yeah! We can use them for work and soldiers
  • We need more resources fast!
  • Despite the number of slaves in the South, only 10% of the army were slaves
  • Very few slaves were used as soldiers, and many were just laborers
  • Let's see what we got here, labor, labor, labor, labor, soldier. NOW GO GO GO
  • But the Union army, that was a different story.
  • Thank you very very much sir.
  • Make yourself at home
  • The Union took in runaway slaves, and gave them shelter
  • Many used this as a chance to write to loved ones
  • "My Dear Wife   it is with grate joy I take this time to let you know Whare I am   i am now in Safety in the 14th Regiment of Brooklyn   this Day i can Adress you thank god as a free man"
  • In the South, they were treated as laborers, beneath the whites, but in the North, they were given shelter and food.
  • As you can see, depending on which side of the war the slaves were on, they were treated very differently.
