Hello, Professor! This is Ari Simon, your new student at our Social Studies Academy!
The First Day
Now, let's take a look at our latest edition of the school newspaper!
Well, we will now begin our news unit! Quite funny how that worked out!
Fake News Newspaper
The Social Studies Academy Gazette Publisher: Professor Lilly-Mae Alfaro BREAKING NEWS: Social Studies Academy to be awarding Professor Alfaro the Golden Teaching Award for being the best teacher in the Academy!
It was a perfectly normal day at Social Studies Academy when Ari Simon, known also as Captain Courageous to very few people, walked into Professor Lilly-Mae Alfaro’s class, known as Professor Evil.
Chapter 2: Taking A Historical Perspective
Good morning class! Today we will be working on our next Social Studies skill of: Taking A Historical Perspective! I am SO excited.
Everyone is almost afraid to begin class with Professor Evil.
All The Wrong Things
Professor Evil is the journalist, writer, photographer, editor, and publisher for the school newspaper. As the class ends, she tells the entire class to tell the whole school and everyone else about the newspaper.
How to use this skill, you ask? You can use this skill to understand how and why people in the past thought differently than us.
It is Ari’s second day in Professor Evil’s class, and she is not at all satisfied with what her teacher is teaching them. But she knows it is not time to uncover her true identity, so she enters the classroom for the second day of lessons.
Professor Evil starts talking about all the wrong things about Taking A Historical Perspective, and Ari is determined to tell everyone what it really is.
Professor, I don't think that what you are teaching is correct! I would like to tell everyone the truth.
Ari begins to tell everyone the real definition: understanding the social, cultural, intellectual, and emotional settings that shaped people's lives and actions in the past. She then gives a few examples: such as that women are not as powerful as men, which was a big statement back in the “olden days”. Another example is that the stronger will always be able to rule over the weak, because of their physical build and more. The last example she gives you is that technology was very absurd back in time, but now it is very common and widely used.
Lastly, this could be misleading because people might not fully understand why people would think differently in the past, and get it all mixed up.
But it obviously is extremely important for everyone to think beyond what they already know about the past and find out more.
