King Lear, close to death, wants to ensure that his lineage is continued and asks his daughters to provide a speech to show their devotion and love for him. In return, they would receive a share of his land and earnings Two of the daughter's mouth praises and promises of love and undying affection whilst the third refuse to let her true love be cheapened by the arbitrary show of love her father demanded.

True to their nature, the two daughters mocked their father and went back on their words, driving their father out and into insanity. The third sister, the one who truly loved her father, had been driven out and to France
And so King Lear was driven out into the wilderness, accompanied by the Fool and, later on, the true son of the Earl of Gloucester, Edgar, surviving storms in which Lear regains some semblance of his previous sanity, minus the pridefulness. His daughters continued to abuse his land and riches until the third comes to stop them.
