  • The Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215. He was forced to sign it by the Nobels because he was being very unfair to the Nobels and other people. The Magna Carta limited King John's power, giving everyone more rights and list what the king can and cannot do.
  • John Locke
  • The Mayflower Compact happened in 1620 by the Pilgrims. They were traveling from England to the colonies to start a new life with their religion. However, when they were on the ship, they were thinking about how there were no rules and everything would be chaos, so they had to pick a leader. They wrote the Social Contract. The Social Contract shows how the Pilgrims made Self Government, and how the Founding Fathers used it when creating the U.S, Self Government.

  • The English Bill of Rights is a government document signed in 1689. The document further limited the King's power and ability to rule and gave more rights to citizens. It also introduced rights such as the right to free speech.

  • John Locke had 3 main ideas, Natural Law, Natural Rights, and Social Contract. Natural Law is a set of laws people know without the government telling them. Natural Rights are rights you receive for being a person in general. A Social Contract is an agreement between people and the government.

  • Baron de Montesquieu had 2 main ideas, "Separation of Power" and "Checks and Balances". Separation of power is the idea that multiple people run the government and are divided into different branches and that not just 1 person has all the power, multiple people with more or less power do. Check and Balances is the idea that if something should be legal, it has to be approved by all government branches.

  • Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet (a small book) known as "Common Sense" in 1776. Thomas wrote the Common Sense pamphlet because he wanted to convince the colonists that they shouldn't be ruled over by Great Britain and that they should fight back, the points made were to prove that it was foolish they were being ruled by Great Britain which is so far from where they reside.
