  • 577 people gathered in one of Versailles indoor tennis courts to pledge that they would not separate until a new constitution had been made.
  • ..."Not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require"...
  • The mob took control of the fight, marking the start of the French Revolution.
  • October 5th, 1789, 7000 women marched to Versailles, armed with various weapons. They were demanding bread from the King and Queen,  who despite everyone starving in France, were still enjoying grand feasts.
  • We want bread! We want bread !
  • Les hommes naissent et demeurent libres et égaux en droits. Les distinctions sociales ne peuvent être fondées que sur l'utilité commune.
  • King Louis and Queen Marie Antoinette were found guilty and condemned to death, although the Queen was killed several months after the King was killed.
  • We've done nothing wrong.
  • During the Reign of Terror, at least 300,000 suspects were arrested; 17,000 were officially executed, and perhaps 10,000 died in prison or without trial.
