The protagonist, Charlie Gordon, is divulged and we can surmise that he has an intellectual disability. Charlie hopes that he will be selected to participate in a science experiment on intelligence levels. Furthermore, we are introduced to Miss. Kinnian, Charlie's teacher, Dr. Strauss, and Dr.Nemur, Charlie's neurosurgeons that conduct the operation on him.
The conflict of the story is presented when Charlie states that he wants to be selected for the operation because he strives to be intelligent. In Charlie's percipience, he believes that his co-workers, doctors, and mentors are all very astute and wise people, however subsequent to the operation, he discovers otherwise.
Donnegan's Plastic Boxes
Charlie's co-workers, Joe Carpenter and Frank Reilly, invited Charlie to gatherings and other events only to taunt and disparage him for being uncoordinated. They told Charlie to retrieve some newspaper and coffees for them and left before he had a chance to return. Another event that transpired throughout the rising action is Charlies IQ exceeds by over 100 and Dr. Strauss and Dr.Nemur were astonished at how well their experiment worked.

Preceding the experiment, Charlie becomes a very intelligent and savvy so he begins to elucidate an equation about the progress of him and Algernon and intelligence quotients. Charlie culminates that eventually, his increasing intelligence levels will reduce just as fast as they escalated. Although Charlie wants to be optimistic, he is very disheartened by the fact that he will be dumb again.
When Charlie was intelligent, he quit his profession at Donnegan's Plastic Box Factory, Charlie wanted his place back after his intelligence was abruptly declining so he could reimburse his rent to the landlord. Charlie was encountered by a co-worker who derided his intelligence. Instead of Frank and Joe not doing anything, they confronted the man and stood up for Charlie. Their shift in behavior resulted from their empathetic emotions for Charlie's circumstances.
In the resolution of the story, Charlie informs Miss. Kinnian and everyone else that he intends on relocating outside of New York City so that nobody will ever discover that Charlie used to be intelligent. In addition, Charlie formed many strong affinities with people and mice and doesnt want to dwell on that forever. His final wish is for Miss. Kinnian to put flowers on Algernons grave before he departs.
