"But you will be faced now, with a pain of magnitude that none of us here can comprehend because it is beyond our experience."
The Giver- Lois Lowry
"Gabe? There can be love"
In the beginning of the story, we are introduced to the main character Jonas and his "family". His sister, Lily, and parents begin to share their feelings and the reader figures out they live in a perfect community. The time and place was not given, just that it is way into the future. Jonas explains how he was frightened (in a good way) about his twelve ceremony. 😁
All of the twelve-year-olds go to their ceremony where each one finds out what job they will have in the community. It is a big deal because they are all separating and becoming adults. Jonas gets very scarred after he wasn't called until they called his name at the very end saying he is given a very special job as The Receiver. This also terrifies him because of the training and not being good enough.
Jonas is training and just starting the most painful stages of it. He is training to know every memory of mankind that the receiver of memories kept. He learns what snow is, colors, sunlight, sunburn, and how once there was different skin colors. Jonas is also beginning to think about how different thinks would be (in a good way) if they lived like the good memories he has.
